I was unprepared for some of the truly impressive collection they have. It had always seemed like a kind of "mom-&-pop," small-town museum to me, and I had no great expectations. But some of what they have was truly worth making the effort to see. They are making a number of upgrades to their already top-quality exhibits, and my guide, London, was excellent - helpful and knowledgeable in equal parts.
At first I was a little disappointed to learn that the site of the museum was not the original site, as one video I watched sorta said it was, and that the structure had been renovated. Nevertheless, for it's size, there's quite a bit of history to see, and worth your time. It certainly adds to the charm of Bedford. BTW the actual site is about 100 yds away along the river, and features a partial reconstruction of the portion that fronted the river. Even though nothing of the original remains, it's nice being able to know where it was; as I live near a place that also had a wooden fort and they are not able to pinpoint the original location.
A great museum that is rich with local history. Getting to chat with Jim Hostetler was a real treat. Some of the artifacts that he metal detected on the Forbes road are show cased in the museum. Great place to visit.
