This school is rampant with bullying and racism. It seems (from my experience) talking to my own child and other students that there are multiple students with disabilities (who receive Special Ed services) that get bullied. My child has heard multiple students refer to African Americans or Native Americans as dogs. She even has (on numerous occasions) heard a student say the “N-word” and groups of students laughing about it. They (school administrators) asked an autistic child to explain why calling someone a dog would be a racist/offensive word. This autistic child has told teachers about bullying, but nothing seems to stop. Girls on the basketball team made fun of/harassed an autistic girl and think its funny. After reporting concerns about (un-named) student allegedly having a history of threatening school violenc* , it seems that they didn’t take it seriously although they say they do. They didn’t follow a 504 plan at all for months and a child suffered mentally because of it. They never acknowledged that and didn’t make a sincere apology. Make sure if your child goes here, that you make sure to follow up that the 504/IEP plan is being followed. School has not shown me any heed of my opinion/ advice on how to fix the big issue of racism and bullying as of presently. Here are some resources I have gathered from research in case you have problems with this school: - Pacer: organization that helps advocate for kids with disabilities and schools dont like the mention of this apparently. - It is supported by federal law for you to observe your child in the school / classroom. They may try to make it difficult, but do not back down if they try to stone-wall you. - I am not an attourney, but I personally document days/times of any issues. Save emails. Record everything you can. - You have a right to file complaints with the department of education and the Office of civil rights if it fits certain problems. I hope all the students never fall victim to any type of harm, but if anything bad happens at that school, I will be the first to come forward with all my evidence to prove they seen and were aware of warning signs. If you have kids that go to this school please teach them to be kind and inclusive of kids with disabilities. Teach them to speak up when they see/hear something that isn’t right. Remember you never know how monumental of an impact your words/actions can have on another human. Watching bullying and do nothing about it is just as bad as doing it yourself (in my opinion). I hope that the school changes their tune at some point.
