A few years ago, my daughter attended Critchlow Adkins Preschool in Easton. During her time there, I noticed several issues that concerned me. For instance, she missed out on playtime because she refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. They also refused to feed her when she arrived a little late in the morning. Additionally, she was punished for certain behaviors, but I was never informed—only finding out because my daughter would tell me herself. (TEACHER PHYLLIS GREENE ) When I discussed these concerns with her teacher at the time, the response was dismissive and defensive. The teacher claimed my daughter was lying and had been misbehaving, but this was the first time I had heard of any issues, as no reports had been made to me previously. I spoke with other teachers who stated that my daughter was telling the truth. I decided to file a complaint, but after weeks of following up, I discovered from someone higher up that the complaint was never even submitted. It wasn’t until someone from Baltimore came down and conducted an investigation with random classroom visits that it was confirmed the daycare had violated several aspects of my daughter’s care. They informed me that the teachers had no right to deny my daughter food and that disciplining her for not standing for the Pledge of Allegiance was inappropriate. I’m sharing this because it’s now led to further discrimination against my daughter. She has been on the waiting list for the school-age site for years now, and my oldest son has been on the list since COVID began without ever being called (Keieve Colbert) .. My youngest son’s father also put him on a different site’s list to accommodate his schedule, but they’ve consistently ignored his calls and told him to call back later. Today was different they finally admitted to my son's father that they didn’t want my children there because I filed a complaint. ELLEN Troutman-Wallace also threatened to file harassment charges if we called again to inquire about the waitlist. While they claim they have the right to refuse anyone, it's unacceptable to deny my children access due to the actions of two teachers who mistreated my daughter. It’s also wrong to string someone along, telling them to call back repeatedly, only to then explode and issue a threat. Now that I have this confirmation, I’ll be contacting the right people to address this situation again and a completely different way ! Dona Austin Easton
